An Easter Feast to Remember – how to cook the perfect turkey roast!

The Easter weekend is a time for gathering round the table with ones you love, and we’re here to help make sure it’s delicious! Whether you’re cooking up a tasty ham, a flavorful whole chicken, a classic turkey or even firing up the grill (weather permitting!), The Chop Shop has you covered with premium, Canadian-raised meats.

In praise of the turkey roast!

We get it: cooking an entire turkey can seem like a daunting task, especially when you’re feeding a smaller crowd or working with limited oven space. Leftovers are great (obviously) but sometimes you just need something smaller, simpler and quicker. Enter, the turkey roast. They have been expertly prepared in-house by our team of Chop Shop butchers, using the freshest turkey from our friends at Rossdown Farms in the Fraser Valley. Take your pick from an all white meat roast, which uses turkey breast, or a mixed roast if you’re a fan of the dark meat too (both boneless).

Seasoning your turkey roast...

After you’ve chosen your perfect turkey roast, it’s time to think about seasonings. Sometimes it’s as simple as sprinkling a little oil, salt, pepper and garlic atop your roast before popping it in the oven. However, if you want to go BIG on flavour, there are so many delicious turkey seasoning recipes out there – have a look at this recipe from Canadian Turkey for some inspiration.

One important thing to note: don’t remove the net casing around your turkey roast, because this is what’s holding the meat together!

Oh, and another thing…if your roasting tray is big enough, it can be a good idea to rest your turkey on a bed of root veggies. Not only will this infuse your veggies with aaaall the flavour, but it will reduce the risk of your turkey getting soggy, too.

Time to get cooking!

When it comes to cooking your boneless turkey roast, the general rule of thumb is this:

Cook the roast uncovered for 30 minutes per pound (e.g. approximately 2 hours for a 4lb roast) at 350F, until your meat thermometer reads approximately 160F when you test the internal temperature of the thickest part of the meat.

At that point, remove it from the oven, cover it with tin foil and allow it to rest until the temperature reaches 165F.

Let’s feast!

And just like that, your turkey roast is good to go! Pair with the fresh veggies of your choice – think pan-frien Brussels Sprouts, creamy mash potato, sweet carrots and of course a decadent gravy to bring it all together. Or, if you want something a little more unusual, our housemade Green Sauce works a treat with turkey too…

The Chop Shop is located at both our stores. You’ll find us at the corner of McKenzie and Blenkinsop, and in the heart of Cook Street Village. We are open daily from 8am-9pm, including throughout the Easter weekend.
