Growing Roots: A Story of Our Journey from 2008 to Today

To kick off this new journey, we’re actually going to take a step back in time. Sixteen years back, to be exact.

It was sixteen years ago, back in 2008, that everything started. Adam and Daisy, the owners of The Root Cellar, arrived in beautiful Victoria straight from the Okanagan, with their three young sons in tow. It was quite the trip, but as we all know now – it was a trip that was well worth it.

In their twenties, with bright new ideas and filled with hope and a touch of fear, the ocean breeze and picturesque views of snow-capped mountains welcomed them to Southern Vancouver Island.

Despite it being a new place, Victoria just felt right. Its people, its values, and community spirit resonated deeply. It felt like home. We’re sure the feeling is familiar – it’s likely why you find yourself here, too.

And slowly, but surely, the pieces of the puzzle began to fit together.

Becoming Your Village Green Grocer

The Root Cellar sprouted from a deep passion for fresh, local food and sustainable food systems. Not only did Victoria embrace this passion, but amplify it, providing the support which allowed The Root Cellar to blossom into what it is today.

While the early days were challenging, a quote “Fortune favours the brave,” became Adam and Daisy’s new mantra, encouraging them to lean into their fears rather than abandon their plans.

In May 2013, we saw the opening of a floral and garden market with The Potting Shed. A few months later, in August, The Chop Shop opened its doors. Then, in March 2018 The Coffee Project kicked off. And, in Fall 2021, the opening of our Oxford Corner marked another exciting leap forward. What started as a company with just eight employees has proudly grown to over 200 strong.

Now, across both markets, we’re thrilled to offer Vancouver Island’s widest selection of locally grown, organic, and conventional produce, along with a full-service butcher & deli, artisanal groceries, dairy, breads, and bulk foods – all under one roof!

The Root Cellar Today

When they first started The Root Cellar, Adam and Daisy’s sons were nine years old, three years old, and five months old. Watching their children grow alongside the store has been a fascinating journey and in many ways, their growth mirrors that of The Root Cellar – both have surpassed everyone’s wildest dreams.

Reflecting on these past 15 years, we are beyond excited to celebrate our journey in the Victoria food scene. Our business has grown, matured, and overcome adversity. We are incredibly proud of what The Root Cellar has become and grateful for the community that has supported us every step of the way.

They say it takes a village to raise a child, and the same holds true for a business. Without the support of our community, our amazing team and enthusiastic customers (yes, YOU reading this blog!), we would not be where we are today.

We are celebrating not just our achievements, but everyone who believed in Adam and Daisy’s dream from day one and throughout our journey. We remain deeply touched by how personally invested and supportive this city has been – your support has been the cornerstone of our success. To everyone who believed in us from the beginning, before day one, and along the way, we wouldn’t be here without you.

As we look to the future, we look forward to the many meals on the horizon.

Truly, thank you for being a part of our story!
