A Letter from the Owners, November 25th 2020 – New Faces + New Places…

I was 29 when Adam & I opened the Root Cellar, we had a 9 year old, a 3 year old and a 3 month old. We’d moved across the province to be here, knew only one couple in the city (ya you R&C! XO) and were scared to death. We had a quote (one that dates back to ancient times) on our bulletin board that said ‘fortune favours the brave,’ and reading this daily quite literally kept us leaning into our fear rather than bailing on our crazy plans. And here we are (well, that’s the short version).

There was another idea we always loved, but were a bit delinquent in embracing. It’s the idea of surrounding yourself with people who are smarter than you. We had each other, we thought we were fine. We were actually ‘fine’, but we were exhausted.

It wasn’t until year 6 and 100 employees that we admitted that we needed internal HR help (about 4 years too late, but life saver!), year 7 that we got our heads around getting help with accounts payable (duh), and this year as we embark on a second location, we’ve finally hired ourselves a General Manager. Two actually, for two stores.

Teaching everything we know to someone new is a bit daunting for us, and our optimism that they’ll love this like we do is a lot of pressure, but I think we’ve found something special in these two.

Another version of myself would have been humbled by admitting that we can’t do it all. But me, right now, today, is ecstatic. Spread too thin is great if you’re mayonnaise. I personally am over it.

We invite you to join us in embracing the new faces you’ll see around here (not literally, please don’t touch them… Covid!). They’re taking on a lot, but we believe it’s a whole lot of something great, and you know what they say…. #fortunefavoursthebrave

XO

Warmly,

Daisy
