Hi Root Cellar Community,
When you peek out from behind the Covid-Curtain as many of us are becoming comfortable doing (please don’t get TOO comfy, keep washing your hands and keeping your distance), you will see one of my very very favourite things… LOCAL GROWING SEASON!
It’s upon us, whether we were paying attention or not, and we couldn’t be more excited. This is when tomatoes taste like tomatoes, when asparagus is so fresh you don’t have to break the ends off and when just the sight of rhubarb makes your mouth water. Don’t even get me started on the joy that fiddleheads and oyster mushrooms bring me, it’s a little bit embarrassing and it’s a good thing that we aren’t out in the world socializing as it’s pretty much all I want to talk about at parties, which isn’t always the biggest hit.
Unless you know, then you know.
If you have a favourite farmer, throw them some love, they’re working as hard or harder than always in spite of the chaos that has surrounded us this spring. Watch for their bounty to hit our shelves (we buy from over 200 local & BC growers & makers), and be mindful as always of where you’re putting your grocery dollars. Our local growers, our local businesses and our Island Economy thank you.
